bake sale info, Saturday Aug 30, all day at Make it Sweet

bakesale

As Jennifer Bartos of Make it Sweet mentioned at our last club meeting, the store will be having an Open House event on July 1 and 2 during their regular business hours. There’ll be plenty of activities for all ages, including a bake sale with proceeds benefitting Capital Confectioners.

The public (especially club members!) are asked to donate baked goods for the sale. This is a great opportunity to try out recipes for bars or cookies you’ve seen in books or online without having to eat a whole batch! With Independence Day later that week, you can bring themed desserts if you wish, or go for a summer or other theme, or just something undecorated that tastes yummy.

Please bring donations to Make it Sweet during business hours on Monday, June 30 or just before opening at 10 am on July 1. If you have a baking business, you can leave some of your business cards to be handed out as well. Then stay to shop, play, and have fun!

And of course even if you can’t bring a baked good, you can come by to buy some! Tell your friends and family and help spread the word!

Many of you have already filled out our volunteer forms (sign up for the mailing list here: http://thattakesthecake.org/index.php/contact-us/volunteer-contact-form/ and then go here to put in your preferred hours: https://thattakesthecake.herokuapp.com/#/home), and we sincerely thank you! A lot of other folks have told us they want to volunteer or have come to meetings but haven’t signed up. We can’t organize folks and get everyone their perks unless they sign up, so even if you’re a long-time volunteer and we know you’re helping, please go fill in both forms!

Perks? What Perks?

Volunteers get stuff! First, you get in the show for free! Second, we’ll be soon be sending out a link for volunteers to pre-order discounted t-shirts that say STAFF on the back. Third, if you volunteer at the show on Saturday and/or Sunday for an entire shift (ie all morning or all afternoon), you can eat lunch for free in our catered hospitality area that day. Note that the lunch is ticket-restricted, though, so you MUST sign up in advance and you can’t bring in friends, family, etc for the lunch. You must also be sure to sign in with the volunteer desk at the show to be assigned to your area and to pick up your lunch tickets. We also give raffle tickets to volunteers based on the number of hours worked, so be sure to sign up, sign in, and help out!

I Have Disabilities/Other Limitations – Can I Volunteer?

Yes! We have a variety of posts ranging from sitting at a desk through to heavy lifting. We have posts where all you have to do is check wristbands and posts where you have to do a lot of technical stuff. We have time slots throughout the show so you still have time to take classes and see the cakes. This whole show is volunteer-powered, so please sign up and give some time!

How Can I Get More Volunteer Hours Outside of the Show?

Be sure to sign up for our Meetup group here: http://www.meetup.com/cakedecorating-132/ We’ve got several meetups on there in the days before the show where we need folks to do a lot of tasks like putting together raffle packs, stuffing envelopes and badges, sorting things, arranging tables, etc.

Send your questions to volunteer@capitalconfectioners.com and a volunteer organizer will get back to you as soon as possible.

Thanks to everyone who helps!

A week from today, Capital Confectioners will be hosting our monthly meeting. This time we’ll be focusing on organizing volunteers for our colossal cake show at the end of February.

So if you’re in the Austin area and want to help at the show – which can earn you some spiffy perks if you put in enough hours – come to this meeting and let us know who you are and what you want to do.

We will also have volunteer sign-up forms on the website soon, but what’s really important about next Tuesday’s meeting is getting more people involved in leadership roles. We want to meet you, discuss your strengths and expertise, and help you find the best and most fun ways you can help us. (Update: The web link for the volunteer form is here, so please fill in your available times asap even if you’re going to discuss specifics at the meeting).

What sort of things need to be done? Lots, including but certainly not limited to: set up and break down, competitor registration and management, hospitality, vendor care, supply management, event/class management and assistance, kids table help, general public management (including guarding cakes against poking fingers), and more. It takes a small army of volunteers to run one of the nation’s largest sugar arts shows!

If you’ve volunteered before, you still should come if you can, because we’re making changes to how perks are earned and other details.

Remember: the coolest volunteer jobs go to the most dedicated, long-term volunteers! For instance, getting to be the assistant at a celebrity class is something we reserve for someone who has also put in tons of hours doing other stuff. So come on out and join our team to not only put on the best cake show ever, but get your own fun slice too!

The meeting is 7 pm, Tuesday January 10, in the conference room at the back of the IHOP by Zilker Park (1101 S Mo Pac Expy, Austin, TX). Further details and RSVP are here. If you’re not already a member of the club, you may need to create an account here first.

We don’t require dues for the first meeting or two. You can definitely check us out for free first! So if you’re keen to volunteer for the show but not necessarily commit to being a club member all year, that’s fine. Come to the Tuesday meeting anyway. We’re happy to have you for what time you can share!

We had a great meeting tonight with lots of new members! Yay! We’re so thrilled new people came and hope they’ll come again!

Irene Hackbarth did a fantastic demo of bride and groom themed discs that would work wonderfully on both cupcakes and cookies. Hopefully someone took some photos and will send them in or post them.

Chris Cantrell made several flavours of delectable cupcakes. Yum!

We talked a lot about our upcoming Day of Sharing on Sunday, July 10. This is a day-long event filled with cake decorating demonstrations, plus you get a continental breakfast, a catered lunch, and desserts baked by our members all for only $40 if you register by June 25, $55 after that. See the link for more details and to register now! Don’t miss it!

I brought along one of my experiments that I’ll be including in my demonstration of advanced gummy techniques. I posted about it here.

And don’t forget to check out the calendar on the left side of our pages here for our upcoming classes.

There’s lots to do at Capital Confectioners, so join us whenever you can! We want to share our passion for sugar arts with you! And all funds go right back to the club so we can keep spreading the goodness throughout our community.

Apparently it’s National Strawberry Shortcake Day! I didn’t have links gathered for that, but luckily Yum Sugar has a post full of strawberry shortcake recipes for you to try.

If you’re in the Austin area, come to the Capital Confectioners’ Club meeting tonight! 7 pm at IHOP (South Mopac), 1101 S Mo Pac Expy Austin, in the back meeting room. We alternate our monthly meetings across several north and south locations to accommodate members from the whole area.

Our meetings start with club business (this month will feature a lot of discussion about our classes and the upcoming Day of Sharing), and then a member gives a demonstration of a decorating technique. Someone always brings an awesome dessert as well.

We don’t charge for meetings although if you come regularly, we ask that you officially join the club for $24 a year. So come on out and see what we’re up to. We’re very friendly. You can even bring the family, especially if you’ve got older kids who want to learn about cake decorating.

Hope to see you there! Tell your friends!

Today on Quick Bites we’ve got a theme of buttercream!

If these cakes have made you hungry, a new baker in Round Rock is enlisting taste-testers! Sign up here!
