Been too busy to post for a bit, but enjoy these lovely works of confectionery art while I start sorting through my massive pile of links to share! A breathtaking Sweet 16 Party Dress Cake by Pink Cake Box. This is definitely in the “OMG I can’t believe that’s edible!” category. Wow. BitRebels has a [...]

- A breathtaking Sweet 16 Party Dress Cake by Pink Cake Box. This is definitely in the “OMG I can’t believe that’s edible!” category. Wow.
- BitRebels has a great posts featuring an edible miniature Shanghai, a a boat made out of chocolate, a chair made out of sugar like a giant lollipop, and cameo portraits carved into the icing inside Oreo cookies.
- Nerdalicious posted this faboo Legend of Zelda cake.
- Also via Nerdalicious is this wonderfully detailed Doctor Who Cake by Michelle Sugar Art.
Still recovering from gummy class and Day of Sharing so apologies for the lack of posts. Here are some cool things I’ve found recently: Bundles of Cookies shares her tips on making Pinwheel Cookies (via CraftGossip). Sweetopia has a nice guide to making logo cookies, but that’s not best part of that page. Check out [...]
Still recovering from gummy class and Day of Sharing so apologies for the lack of posts. Here are some cool things I’ve found recently:
- Bundles of Cookies shares her tips on making Pinwheel Cookies (via CraftGossip).
- Sweetopia has a nice guide to making logo cookies, but that’s not best part of that page. Check out the 8th photo, the last before the giveaway (which is over, sorry): she suggests using a microplane grater to fix the edges on cookies. GENIUS.
- Sweetology 101 offers an adorable recipe for Peach Hat Pies.
- Pure Joy Events has a tutorial on making Thread Spools Cake Pops by 6 Bittersweets (via CraftGossip).
- Sweet Sugarbelle posted some instructions for what she calls The Easiest Pirate Face Cookies You’ll Ever Make which go well with her Pirate Ship Cookies and she gives equal gender opportunity with Girl Pirate Cookies as well. Because she is awesome.
Quick Bites: One Link, So Much Ice Cream
I do these Quick Bites pages by surfing around for nifty dessert-related links, then occasionally gathering similar ones together in themed posts, or just tossing out a bunch of random stuff when I’m busy. But mostly I maintain an ever-lengthening list of coolness so I can attempt to sort. This list currently has several of [...]

This list currently has several of Dollhouse Bake Shoppe’s ice cream-themed treats and I figured I’d find some others to go with them. That is until today, when the kind folks over there posted a great big list of their awesomeness all on their own:
Dollhouse Bake Shoppe’s Ice Cream Treat Round Up
Go, read, drool, make!
PS It’s apparently National Peach Ice Cream Day, so that goes with the above and serves as a reminder that I’m looking for peach recipes for a forthcoming post, so send in your favourite peach recipes/links/etc!
Ultra-Quick Bites: More 4th of July
I need to put in some serious hours today towards a collaborative showpiece cake and my demonstration for Capital Confectioners’ Day of Sharing but I saw two more fun Fourth of July treats I just had to share, both via CraftGossip: Marshmallows, fruit roll-ups, and Starburst candies become Patriotic Pops in the hands of Kitchen [...]
I need to put in some serious hours today towards a collaborative showpiece cake and my demonstration for Capital Confectioners’ Day of Sharing but I saw two more fun Fourth of July treats I just had to share, both via CraftGossip:
- Marshmallows, fruit roll-ups, and Starburst candies become Patriotic Pops in the hands of Kitchen Fun With My 3 Sons.
- Nifty Red, White and Blue Raspberry Candy Bars by Cherry Tea Cakes.
Also, Happy Canada Day to my fellow Canucks! This also marks the third anniversary of my family’s arrival in Austin. I shall now celebrate both by going into the kitchen to make a bunch of fondant monkey torsos and some more gummy goodness, all for Day of Sharing. Hope to see you there!
Quick Bites: Fourth of July Mega-Edition Part 2
I found more Fourth of July goodies to share, and I’m sure more will come over the weekend as well. However, since all of the core volunteers at Capital Confectioners are working like crazy to present an amazing Day of Sharing, blog posts are going to be a little less frequent as we approach that [...]
I found more Fourth of July goodies to share, and I’m sure more will come over the weekend as well. However, since all of the core volunteers at Capital Confectioners are working like crazy to present an amazing Day of Sharing, blog posts are going to be a little less frequent as we approach that date.
For now here are some more Independence Day desserts:
- First, the amazing Sweet Sugarbelle shows you how to make plastic templates to make fun little rocket cookies. She also partnered with Glorious Treats to whip up a tutorial on making star-shaped stained glass cookies. Both of these techniques are widely adaptable, so bookmark them for future use!
- Apparently featuring the irrepressible 1 Fine Cookie in the previous Quick Bites post inspired her to look into Canada Day desserts along with more Independence Day fun with Pop Rock Cupcakes with Fireworks Truffle Toppers.
- Going for a beach picnic this long weekend? Take some of Munchkin Munchies’ cute little Burger Bites Cookies or Bake at 350′s nifty Fried Chicken cookies. If you can’t go to an actual beach, you can still use that theme at your party with help from Diamonds For Dessert’s lovely Sand Dollar Cookies (via CraftGossip).
- If you’d like some healthier fare, Bakers Royale made some Fruit Dessert Pops with creative use of cutters (via CraftGossip). If you’d like to start out with healthy fruit and then do things to it that make it less healthy but extra fun, fANNEtastic Food has a great suggestion for strawberries at the bottom of this post and Tidy Mom shows you how to make Red White & Blue Candy Apples.
- Lastly, check out Sweetology 101′s adorable School House Rock I’m Just A Bill Cupcake. I love that song, and being the awful nerd that I am, I love some of the parodies even more. But I’ll let interested parties look those up themselves…
Quick Bites: Odd Fare
Today on Quick Bites, odd things as inspired by this morning’s trending topic of “Fried Kool-Aid” on Twitter. First: a news story explaining what Fried Kool-Aid is (basically a doughnut hole with Kool-Aid in the mix). I can see that it’d just be a fruity-sweet doughnut. What do you all think? Have you tried it? [...]

- While on the subject of deep frying, check out this Instructable about Deep Fried Doughnut Cupcakes.
- Here’s something unusual that works really well: a cake surrounded by Kit Kat bars by Cake Whiz. Amazing how elegant it looks!
- Lastly, on these hot days if you’re looking for something a bit upmarket relative to a standard popsicle, try making what Scent of Green Bananas calls Ice Candy. I’m sure you can use the recipe concept in regular freeze pop molds even if you can’t find the bags discussed in the article. Via CraftGossip

Tonight’s Meeting
We had a great meeting tonight with lots of new members! Yay! We’re so thrilled new people came and hope they’ll come again! Irene Hackbarth did a fantastic demo of bride and groom themed discs that would work wonderfully on both cupcakes and cookies. Hopefully someone took some photos and will send them in or [...]

Chris Cantrell made several flavours of delectable cupcakes. Yum!
We talked a lot about our upcoming Day of Sharing on Sunday, July 10. This is a day-long event filled with cake decorating demonstrations, plus you get a continental breakfast, a catered lunch, and desserts baked by our members all for only $40 if you register by June 25, $55 after that. See the link for more details and to register now! Don’t miss it!
I brought along one of my experiments that I’ll be including in my demonstration of advanced gummy techniques. I posted about it here.
And don’t forget to check out the calendar on the left side of our pages here for our upcoming classes.
There’s lots to do at Capital Confectioners, so join us whenever you can! We want to share our passion for sugar arts with you! And all funds go right back to the club so we can keep spreading the goodness throughout our community.
Quick Bites: Fathers’ Day Part 2
I went on a serious hunt for Fathers’ Day stuff that wasn’t ties and sports, mostly since my husband still resents the ties he had to wear to school every day growing up in Australia and isn’t interested in sports unless it’s cricket (well I did find some adorable cricket and soccer cupcakes via The [...]
I went on a serious hunt for Fathers’ Day stuff that wasn’t ties and sports, mostly since my husband still resents the ties he had to wear to school every day growing up in Australia and isn’t interested in sports unless it’s cricket (well I did find some adorable cricket and soccer cupcakes via The Cupcake Blog but that’s not what I was searching for). Turns out it’s really hard to find Fathers’ Day stuff beyond the standard stereotypical male interests. Here are the results of my search:
- This isn’t specific to Fathers’ Day, but if you’ve got the kind of man in your life who reads Make Magazine and not Sports Illustrated, he might appreciate this programmed LED-lit cake.
- Hungry Happenings turns Gumdrop Cookies into a Dad tribute which is very cute.
- Lastly I saw this adorable gem on The Cupcake Blog. No instructions available, but it’s lovely.
If any of our readers or members have other Fathers’ Day ideas, either standard or unusual, share them in the comments!
Quick Bites: Random Goodies
Today on Quick Bites: no theme, just fun! Check out these cool plane cookies by Cookie Daydream. I love how she did the cloud effects. Be sure to click the image for a closer look. Fabulous! Carolyn’s Homework shows you how to turn candies into a sweet necklace. Via CraftGossip Bake Happy has a great [...]

- Bake Happy has a great tutorial on making Mermaid Cupcakes that look like they’re swimming in a wee little pool. So cute! Via Cupcakes Take The Cake.
- And finally, check out this cool fun way to use sanding sugar by the folks at YumSugar.
Quick Bites: National Doughnut Day
Today on Quick Bites: it’s National Doughnut Day! Aside from the fact that many doughnut stores are offering freebies today, here are some fun doughnut links: A cute little doughnut cake, baker unknown but spotted on GirlyBubble.com. A Homer Simpson Doughnut Cake. Not sure who the decorator is as it appears in a photostream from [...]
Today on Quick Bites: it’s National Doughnut Day! Aside from the fact that many doughnut stores are offering freebies today, here are some fun doughnut links:
- A cute little doughnut cake, baker unknown but spotted on GirlyBubble.com.
- A Homer Simpson Doughnut Cake. Not sure who the decorator is as it appears in a photostream from a show. And of course there’s always Browen Webber’s Simpsons cake on Food Network Challenge.
- I found a lot of stacks of doughnuts that were meant to be cakes of sorts, but none of those compare to this World Record attempt or Krispy Kreme’s 65th Birthday Doughnut Cake.
- The Party Animal Blog shows you how to make a Donut Robot Birthday Cake.
Do you have a favourite doughnut recipe? I don’t, but I do have a tutorial on how to knit a torus, which is sort of close. You could make an elongated version of the icing from this cupcake pattern and stitch it on the doughnut. Then you could always have a doughnut around whenever you want it, calorie-free. Yay!
