I’ve posted a slightly updated version of my gummy tutorial/recipe on my food blog (it used to just be on my website), including a photo-free version for easier printing.
As promised, zombie cake!
As promised at our last club meeting and in my previous post, here’s a tutorial on how to make a really gross zombie-skin cake:
Gummy Update
For those who attended our gummy class or are otherwise interested in my experiments on the subject, I’ve posted two updates on my blog of recent nifty discoveries:

Summer may be wrapping up for some but it’s still hot as blazes here in Austin, so enjoy these refreshing beach/summer-themed treats and projects!
- Got some clean sand molds but no sand? Make marshmallow sea creatures with help from Hungry Happenings, who also has this great tutorial and recipe on making Starfish S’Mores.
- Feeling crabby? The Seven Year Cottage has a tutorial on making cute little candy crabs on “sandy” brownies via CraftGossip. Or check out her candy octopi here.
- If you’re still in the crabby frame of mind, Martha Stewart has a pretty Sand Bucket Angel Food Cake featuring tiny little crab jellies. Of course, I’d be more inclined to find or make a mold to make my own gummy candy (say with the fish ice cube tray from IKEA) because that’d be easier for me than finding a crab-shaped mini cutter and then the right size jelly candies to cut. But maybe that’s just me!
- Make that hot sun beating down feel less angry by whipping up a batch of these Happy Sunshine Cookies by Glorious Treats.
By the way, we now have an “as seen on” graphic those featured can place on their blogs! It’s on our About Us page.

Whether it’s this week, next, or just after Labour Day, kids in North America are heading back to school! Here are some fun goodies to inspire you for back to school treats of your own.
First up, two book-themed cakes by Sprinkle Bakes: a gorgeous one called Words Take Flight and then a Birthday Trip To Narnia with the White Witch plus a recipe for Microwave Turkish Delight.
The Decorated Cookie Blog also takes a confectionery trip through literature with Harry Potter Painted Marshmallows and applies the same technique to some First Day of School Marshmallow Pops.
Hungry Happenings did some experiments to find a non-corn-syrup-based modelling chocolate recipe and discovered that, when combined with some fruit leather, she’d made tasty and adorable little books. Check out her recipe and tutorial here. She’s also got a round-up of some of her other school-themed treats here, some of which I think I’ve featured here before.
For a tutorial on making little monogrammed fondant books, check out this post by A Baked Creation.
The Sugar Turntable shows you how to make Chalkboard Cookies (via CraftGossip).
If your favourite student is into puzzles and you dig a bit of a baking challenge, go for this Rubik’s Cube Battenburg Cake by S’tasty.
It’s not just kids going back to school. If you happen to know a grown-up heading off to train for cop duty, you’ll definitely want to make these Police Academy Themed Cupcakes by Bake Happy. Even if you don’t, check out the creative use of parts of cutter shapes and texture pins.
Quick Bites: Cupcake Goodness
Today on Quick Bites, lots of fun with cupcakes!
Making Cupcakes
- First, maybe you want a cupcake or two but don’t want to go to the trouble of mixing a big batch and then finding other people to eat them with you. Because eating an entire batch of cucpakes would be wrong. Yes. Very wrong. Why are you looking at me like that? Anyway, lucky for you How Sweet Eats posted this recipe for One Bowl Vanilla Cupcakes For Two (via CraftGossip).
- For those who want a little more, Krissy’s Creations has a recipe for Hot Fudge Cupcakes You Eat With a Spoon (via Cupcakes Take the Cake). You’re welcome.
- Want to swirl two colours of icing on your cupcakes? You can buy two-part bags or use Our Best Bites’ handy instructions for using two bags for two-toned icing out of a single tip.
- Add cute chocolate butterflies and dragonflies to your cupcakes (or any cake) with advice from Sisteroo (via CraftGossip).
Amazing Cupcakes
- Do you like cute cupcakes? Then warm your heart with this The Cupcake Blog post of a incredibly adorable Chilly Penguin cupcake by Little Cake House. Also via The Cupcake Blog are these sweet little VW Beetle cupcakes by Lindie Sugar Art.
- Don’t like cute cupcakes? Consider yourself exterminated by these two different yet equally awesome Dalek cupcakes: first HepKitten’s post of fondant-wrapped little techno-beasties and then these elegant drageed invaders on Cupcakes Take the Cake made by Crumbs & Doilies. Either way, you’re going to need a Doctor.
- Now, what if you love cute cupcakes and nerdy sci-fi cupcakes but also want a phenomenal cake to go with them? First of all, you’re asking a lot. Secondly, Jcake Homemade totally has you covered with this phenomenal Star Wars Cake and Cupcakes, which was also found at The Cupcake Blog.
Quick Bites: Who Goes There?
Give a hoot about these…okay no. No more bad owl puns in this post, I promise. Just awesome confection tutorials!
- Inspire Create Bake didn’t post a lot of instructions for this cute owl cake but there are enough photos and tips for you to be able to go forth and make your own version (via CraftGossip).
- Sweetopia has step-by-step photos for decorating lovely owl cookies. Since the base is just a circle, this method could readily be used directly onto a smooth cake as well.
- Family Fun has instructions for an owl cupcake cake that’s quite lovely and not a distorted blob (as so often happens with cupcake cakes) by highlighting the circle shapes as feathers using chocolate wafer cookies. Plus the overall look is enhanced with single cupcake owls as babies. Adorable!
- Parenting.com has instructions for an owl cake using Oreos for the eyes.
- 6 Bittersweets presents her version of Oreo cookie owl cupcakes complete with recipes and photos, plus a great link to Weeshare’s list of owl cupcakes for even more inspiration.

Today on Quick Bites, peach recipes!
- First, check out how the home-made gummy goodness is spreading: Nature of Grace has a recipe for Homemade Chipotle Peach Gummi Bears (via CraftGossip). She says she found her bear mold in the clearance section at a craft store. I have the same mold (some of you at our Day of Sharing ate bears from it) and I found it in the kids’ section of Hobby Lobby in June. You can also Google around for molds of all kinds! And of course if you want to learn advanced gummy techniques, there may still be spots left in our Gummy Class on July 24. If you’ve made something creative with gummy, be sure to tell us and we might feature you on a future post!
- Here are three options for grilled peaches: Evil Shenanigans turns them into Grilled Peach and Vanilla Cake Trifle with Golden Syrup Whipped Cream, and Dessert for Two (a great blog that scales down desserts into smaller versions) serves Grilled Peaches With Cinnamon Ice Cream. Good Life Eats shares a recipe for Grilled Peaches with Mascarpone Whip and Fresh Raspberry Sauce plus links to more peach recipes on that page.
- Kraft suggests this recipe for Peach Shortcakes.
- Bless Her Heart whipped up a delicious-looking Peach Bundt Cake with Peach Glaze and shared the recipe.
- Brown Eyed Baker found a pile of peaches a couple of years back and posted a recipe for Peach Crumb Bars.
Got another peach recipe? Post it in the comments! Meanwhile, pardon me while I go out back and water my old show cake.
Quick Bites: One Link, So Much Ice Cream
I do these Quick Bites pages by surfing around for nifty dessert-related links, then occasionally gathering similar ones together in themed posts, or just tossing out a bunch of random stuff when I’m busy. But mostly I maintain an ever-lengthening list of coolness so I can attempt to sort. This list currently has several of [...]

This list currently has several of Dollhouse Bake Shoppe’s ice cream-themed treats and I figured I’d find some others to go with them. That is until today, when the kind folks over there posted a great big list of their awesomeness all on their own:
Dollhouse Bake Shoppe’s Ice Cream Treat Round Up
Go, read, drool, make!
PS It’s apparently National Peach Ice Cream Day, so that goes with the above and serves as a reminder that I’m looking for peach recipes for a forthcoming post, so send in your favourite peach recipes/links/etc!
