FYI, I just made a blog post about eye placement on snowmen cookies, and they happen to be the cookies I brought to the Capital Confectioners holiday party, so you all ate these crazy things.

- Got some clean sand molds but no sand? Make marshmallow sea creatures with help from Hungry Happenings, who also has this great tutorial and recipe on making Starfish S’Mores.
- Feeling crabby? The Seven Year Cottage has a tutorial on making cute little candy crabs on “sandy” brownies via CraftGossip. Or check out her candy octopi here.
- If you’re still in the crabby frame of mind, Martha Stewart has a pretty Sand Bucket Angel Food Cake featuring tiny little crab jellies. Of course, I’d be more inclined to find or make a mold to make my own gummy candy (say with the fish ice cube tray from IKEA) because that’d be easier for me than finding a crab-shaped mini cutter and then the right size jelly candies to cut. But maybe that’s just me!

Attention Cookiers!
The team behind the Austin cake and sugar arts show (That Takes the Cake!), one of the nation’s largest confections shows, knows that cookie decorating is a hot topic these days and we’d like to include more cookie stuff in the 2012 and future shows (our show is the last weekend of February every year). The team behind the Austin cake and sugar arts show (That Takes the Cake!), one of the nation’s largest confections shows, knows that cookie decorating is a hot topic these days and we’d like to include more cookie stuff in the 2012 and future shows (our show is the last weekend of February every year).
However, in the past our cookie categories within the competition have attracted hardly any competitors. We folded cookies in with other general non-cake confections because there seemed to be a lack of interest.
We have cookiers in our club, we know great area cookie folks, and we recognize cookies as a burgeoning art form. But in order to include it in the show, we need to know that our effort and funds are being put to good use.
So if you want to see more cookie stuff at the 2012 or future shows, or possibly even a separate cookie event, speak up!
Leave your comments on this post telling us what you want. Competitions? Classes? Vendors? What would get you to come to the show as a cookier? If you’re in the Austin area and want to volunteer let us know that as well, specifying what you can do to help.
Then spread the word and send your cookie friends here to comment as well!
We’re happy to serve, but we need cookiers to tell us what they want and help make it a success!
Update August 28: Over a week and not one comment. A couple people have mentioned on Twitter that they don’t want to create a WordPress login to comment, but if folks aren’t willing to take a few seconds to do that, how can Capital Confectioners be sure any of them will participate in the show?
If for some technical reason you can’t comment, you can send your message to me at press at capitalconfectioners.com and I will post it for you.
Seriously, last call: if you want a cookie component in one of the nation’s largest sugar arts shows, speak now or forever hold your peace. Or piece of cake, as it may be!
Quick Bites: Construction Goodies
It’s a safe bet if you read this blog with any regularity that you either bake or want to. Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, the time will come when you need to ship something, present something, or dress something up. You could spend a fortune on pre-made items, or you could read the following bits of awesome advice on DIY constructions, presentations, and shipments:
- First of all, maybe you want to draw something on some cookies or even a fondant-covered cake, but you don’t want to have to go by eye alone for straight lines a hundred times in a row. You could go out and find a stencil and hope that it fits your needs, or you could follow Hanielas’ advice on making a template for calendar cookies and change it to suit your project. And I can’t recall if I’ve already listed Sweet Sugarbelle’s guide to paper cookie stencils but there it is again just in case!
- Then again, maybe stenciling isn’t your thing. You want to stamp something, but the craft store just doesn’t have what you want. You can’t possibly make your own cake and cookie stamps, or can you? This Craftzine post has full details on making your own no-carve stamps using silicone on acrylic plexiglass. Simply use a food-grade silicone (i.e. those rated safe for kitchen use) and you can make your own custom stamps with the same basic skills you already use for piping!
- Now you’ve got some goodies, maybe some stamp-topped cupcakes. How are you going to present them in a cute, fun, original way? You could go buy a bunch of pre-made cuffs, which I personally consider to be fairly expensive given that they’re usually single-use. You could design and print your own using this template by Skip To My Lou, or do a Google search for more free printables. Or you could use these handy tips (scroll about 2/3 the way down) from Brenda’s Wedding Blog to craft your own fabulous cupcake wraps out of doilies and easily stuck-on fake gems (via CraftGossip). If you’re a super-duper decorator, you could even use an edible glue with your own hand-cast sugar jewels! The creative possibilities are wide and inspiring!
- Ah, but maybe a cute little wrapper isn’t enough. Your cupcakes need to be sent home with guests in a safe, cozy, sweet little box, and you don’t like any of the bog-standard ones you’ve seen at the craft store. DIY to the rescue again! Myrtle and Grace shares her Cupcake Box Tutorial here.
- Wraps are all well and good, but how to display your cupcakes at the event itself? Do you need to buy fancy and expensive pre-made stands? Heck no! Sweetly Sweet shows you how to make your very own reusable, sturdy cupcake stands! Be sure to grab her free printable here (it even includes matching invitations, labels, and more!). Via CraftGossip.
- But what to do if you need something bigger and more heavy-duty? Glamour and Grace posted this excellent tutorial on making your own cake stand with options for gorgeous edging. Also via CraftGossip. And here’s my personal tip: you can frequently find lovely plates and potential bases at Goodwill or other thrift stores, which means you’ll spend less money, support charities, and be eco-conscious all in one go. So many wins there that I lost count!
- Finally, if you’ve got to ship those precious treats, check out this How To Package Cookies For Shipping video by University of Cookie. A lot of the advice will apply equally to other baked goods as well.
What are your favourite DIY tips to facilitate your baking presentations?
And remember: if you like it when people go to great lengths to give you free stuff others charge for, especially those printables, it encourages them to keep doing it if you post a comment of thanks when you use them!

Still recovering from gummy class and Day of Sharing so apologies for the lack of posts. Here are some cool things I’ve found recently:
- Bundles of Cookies shares her tips on making Pinwheel Cookies (via CraftGossip).
- Sweetopia has a nice guide to making logo cookies, but that’s not best part of that page. Check out the 8th photo, the last before the giveaway (which is over, sorry): she suggests using a microplane grater to fix the edges on cookies. GENIUS.
- Sweetology 101 offers an adorable recipe for Peach Hat Pies.
- Pure Joy Events has a tutorial on making Thread Spools Cake Pops by 6 Bittersweets (via CraftGossip).
- Sweet Sugarbelle posted some instructions for what she calls The Easiest Pirate Face Cookies You’ll Ever Make which go well with her Pirate Ship Cookies and she gives equal gender opportunity with Girl Pirate Cookies as well. Because she is awesome.
Quick Bites: Harry Potter
In case you haven’t heard, there’s some kind of movie coming out today. Something about a hirsute boy wizard with a thing for ceramics and fermented dairy products. Wait, I’m confused… In other words, today’s Quick Bites are all about the butterbeer, snitches, chocolate frogs, and other Potter goodies! If there was an award for [...]

In other words, today’s Quick Bites are all about the butterbeer, snitches, chocolate frogs, and other Potter goodies!
- If there was an award for “Most Harry Potter Desserts In Both Quantity and Awesomeness Award”, it’d go to Bakingdom, who shows you how to make a Hogwarts cake that shows the house colours when cut, like magic! She’s also got Double Double Chocolate Cauldron Cakes, Harry Potter Sugar Cookies, Tiny Treacle Tarts, Honeydukes Candyfloss Cupcakes, A Fanciful Fondant Phoenix Cake, and even Butterbeer in both alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions.
- Our esteemed president Kyla sent in this link to Golden Snitch Butterbeer Cake Pops by Amy Bites, who also has a recipe for Butterbeer Cupcakes.
- Bakeat350tweets tweeted Sugarcrafter’s Butterbeer Blondies.
- One dessert not good enough for your needs? Ezra Pound Cake has a whole menu of Harry Potter desserts, including a long list of even more links for you to peruse!
Late addition! I spied Bake at 350′s very own Butterbeer Cookies and since she passed on Sugarcrafter’s link above, wanted to make sure to include her own awesome cookies as well!

Today is, apparently, National Sugar Cookie Day. I have a zillion great cookie links piled up to share on a Quick Bites post, but need to spend my day in the kitchen prepping for my gummy demo for tomorrow’s Day of Sharing.
So to those legions of you reading (which will inevitably be lessened today by all the other super-mega-busy core volunteers): post your favourite sugar cookie recipes, photos, links, etc. in the comments!
Yes, I’m begging you to do my work for me, but I promise all attendees of Day of Sharing will appreciate it!
Quick Bites: Things I Found Today
Not much time for online stuff as we volunteers prep for Day of Sharing, but I happened upon these great links today so I’ll throw ‘em together and call it a post! - Sweet Sugarbelle has posted more how-tos and videos about outlining and filling cookies with royal icing.
- Crafty Penguin has a detailed tutorial on making modelling chocolate horizontal stripes around a cake.
- Sprinkle Bakes has a recipe and tutorial on making Chocolate Cupcakes with Flaming Strawberries.
- Easy Cake Ideas has a great tutorial on making an upright R2D2 cake.
And a correction: on the first 4th of July post I wrongfully attributed the cake ball flag arrangement based on where I’d seen it posted. That has now been corrected on the post to give proper credit to My Juice Cup. My apologies.
