I happened to be looking for something else on CraftGossip and accidentally lingered looking at some lovelies. So even though I rarely have time to post Quick Bites anymore (since they turned out not to be very quick on my end!), here are a few gems:
- How to make clever tulip-shaped cake pops by Strawberry Chic.
- Operation Game cookies by Oh,Sugar! Events. (And yes, for those who saw the great Burton Farnsworth at our cake show in Austin last weekend wearing an Operation Game shirt, I just emailled him about these cookies!)
- An epic peacock cupcake by No Ordinary Cake. Indeed!

- Bundles of Cookies shares her tips on making Pinwheel Cookies (via CraftGossip).
- Sweetopia has a nice guide to making logo cookies, but that’s not best part of that page. Check out the 8th photo, the last before the giveaway (which is over, sorry): she suggests using a microplane grater to fix the edges on cookies. GENIUS.

Quick Bites: Fourth of July, Mega-Edition
Today on Quick Bites we’re stuffed full of inspiration for your baking needs for Independence Day a week from today. No, really: there’s stuffing going on in at least one of these recipes! Today on Quick Bites we’re stuffed full of inspiration for your baking needs for Independence Day a week from today. No, really: there’s stuffing going on in at least one of these recipes!
As with the Memorial Day post, I looked for desserts beyond the obvious staple of a flag made out of an arrangement of blueberries, strawberries, and whipped cream. Here are links to pictures, recipes, and tutorials ranging from simple and cute to “how the heck did they do THAT?!” Enjoy.
- First, four links found via the fabulous CraftGossip blog:
- Awesome Patriotic Lollipops by Couldn’t Be Parve.
- A neat and simple idea: a candy-dipped preztel American flag by Poca Cosa.
- A tutorial on making tie-dye style royal icing cookies reminiscent of fireworks by Red Couch Recipes.
- And a round-up of American-flag-themed free printables and recipes from HGTV, including a tutorial about a particularly nifty cake that looks like a flag when you cut into it by Glorious Treats.
- Hoosier Homemade shows you how to bake multi-coloured cupcakes with a fireworks icing motif similar to the cookies above.
- Foodsnots takes the fireworks cupcake literally to a new level with these stacked firework cupcakes.
- My Juice Cup presents a lovely version of a trend I saw on several blogs: cake balls arranged into a flag plus other 4th-inspired cake balls.
- Love From the Oven posted some cute Red, White & Blue Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes. I love the idea of standing them up in M&Ms.
- If all of those delicious links have left you undecided between cookies or cupcakes, the legendary Sweet Sugarbelle has a guest post about American flag cupcake cookies on Cookies and Cups.
- Or if you don’t want cookies or cupcakes at all, go with 1 Fine Cookie’s suggestion of Toasted Smore Stuffed Strawberries born of her love for America, the Fourth of July, summer, and an apparent desire for her attractive readers to deliver physical punishment unto her as thanks for her delicious concoctions. (Seriously, read her blog even if you’re not going to stuff anything into a strawberry because the laughs alone are worth it!)
Got a Fourth of July recipe/technique I missed? Post it in the comments! I may even do a second post later in the week if I find enough other goodies to share.
PS If you happen to be Canadian, as I am, we’ve got your July 1 holiday goodness (beyond arranged strawberries on whipped cream) here: Canadian Flag Mini Cupcakes, Maple Shortbread, and don’t forget the Nanaimo Bars (links to official recipes at the bottom)! And yes, I’m pondering how one could possibly pull off the Glorious Treats American Flag Cake above but using the Canadian Flag instead…ooo, a challenge! Muahahaha!
Quick Bites: Randomness
Today for Quick Bites I randomly selected four links that happened to have been plonked in a row in my list of cool things to share on this blog. Let’s see what we ended up with, shall we?
- Ooo, this is a good one! If you haven’t noticed, Pastry & Baking Magazine lets you read their issues for free! There are some seriously gorgeous projects in there! They also recently tweeted a PDF of Popcorn Bag Cake instructions by Elisa Strauss.
- Looking for something more simple and basic? Check out Dollhouse Bake Shoppe’s Beer Pops made with only two ingredients.
- Sweet Sugar Belle posted a tutorial on Making A Paper Cookie Stencil for Fathers’ Day, but the technique is adaptable to any motif you need.
- Lastly, Wicked Good Blog shares some tips on making cartoon eyes and duck faces for cupcakes (although they could go on other things as well). She’s got more cute animals on there too which will have tutorials in her forthcoming book.
By the way, some of our members have sent me some photos of cakes so when I get a chance I’m going to put together some posts featuring their awesome work. If you’re a member, send me links, photos, or whatever you’ve got and I’ll post your stuff too! And if you’ve sent me something already and I haven’t acknowledged it, it’s only because I’m busy prepping for Day of Sharing, for which you’ve all already registered, right?
Quick Bites: Fun Small Things
Looks like I was so busy this weekend I missed Applesauce Cake Day on June 4 and National Gingerbread Day on June 5. Who comes up with all of these holidays anyway? Looks like I was so busy this weekend I missed Applesauce Cake Day on June 4 and National Gingerbread Day on June 5. Who comes up with all of these holidays anyway?
Today on Quick Bites, some fun small edibles:
- Cake balls are awesome but also becoming pretty common, so it takes an impressive technique or design to catch my eye. That’s definitely the case with these watermelon cake pops by NataliesCakePops as featured on the Cupcakes Take the Cake blog. Natalie uses chocolate chips inside the cake ball to simulate watermelon seeds. Such an awesome effect from a basic ingredient! Genius!
- Another nifty cake pop that hardly looks like a cake pop at all: Mustache Cake Pops by 1 Fine Cookie. These are so funny and awesome! I want to make a batch for my daughter and her friends because I’m entirely cracked up at the thought of a bunch of five-year-olds goofing off with these treats.
- If you haven’t seen it already, check out this video of a prototype multiple cake ball roller machine by Heavenly Cake Pops. Definitely something that could end up being very cool if they can get it to a mass-market distribution and price!
- If you want to go small but cake balls aren’t your thing, check out this tutorial on Micro-Cupcakes baked in thimbles by kristylynn84 on Instructables.
And a last note: while the items on Minnie Kitchen’s blog aren’t actually edible (I assume), they’re mind-blowingly gorgeous recreations of food in dollhouse scale. Go spend a good long time looking at her stuff and be prepared to be amazed!
Quick Bites: Memorial Day
Today on Quick Bites: Memorial Day cakes that do not use strawberries and blueberries to make a US flag. That’s what half the internet will show you today, but at Capital Confectioners, we like to be topical and different at the same time! US flag cakes are fairly common, especially on Memorial Day, but this [...]
Today on Quick Bites: Memorial Day cakes that do not use strawberries and blueberries to make a US flag. That’s what half the internet will show you today, but at Capital Confectioners, we like to be topical and different at the same time!
- US flag cakes are fairly common, especially on Memorial Day, but this one by Spring Lake Cake is very classy and elegant the way it translates the stripes into a bow atop a rich blue background with nicely-placed white stars. Even the surrounding cupcakes come across as respectful accents.
- Kim C. (no relation to me but I dig her name!) posted three Memorial Day cake ball ideas: arranged as a flag, sprinkles, and drizzled. She’s also got some adorable Navy-themed cupcakes.
- If you want to add some flag flair to you Memorial Day cake stand, or save it for the 4th of July later, check out these simple directions by Better Homes and Gardens. Also works for Bastille Day, Australia Day, or any other day celebrated by a nation with a red, white, and blue flag. Or use different coloured streamers to suit your needs. It’s all good! Via CraftGossip
- Need to put together a quick cake for a pool party today? Got some candies on hand? Go for this easy and cute pool cake from Taste of Home. If you’re just hanging at home with the kids, get them involved and use it as an excuse to use up some of that leftover Easter candy to make your own version. Or if you’re like me and limit your kids’ candy, you might even have a stockpile going back to Halloween. Make a multi-holiday pool-party extravaganza cake and enjoy the day with creative cakey fun!
Quick Bites: Menu of Recipe Goodness
Today on Quick Bites: yummy-looking recipes I want to try soon. Today on Quick Bites: yummy-looking recipes I want to try soon. Here they are arranged in a convenient daily meal plan:
- For breakfast I’ll have these Mini Cinnamon Streusel Pancake Muffins by Bakingdom.
- Of course, after a breakfast like that, I’d have to go out for a morning jog, just like I do every day that ends with the letter “J”. To quench my inevitable thirst, I’ll need some of Firefly Confections’ new Pink Lemonade Cake and/or Cake Balls.
- Pie is good for you, right? Good. For lunch I’ll have Chocolate Chip Cookie Pie by Our Best Bites.
- All of that baking is going to be a lot of work, so I’ll need an afternoon snack. Think I’ll try some Homemade Fudge Rounds by Confessions of a Cookbook Queen.
- I’ll then get some shells to plate this elegant dinner of Dessert on the Half Shell: Gâteau au Chocolat with Sea Salt and Olive Oil by SprinkleBakes.
- Lastly, as a palate-cleansing dessert (because what’s a cake blog menu without dessert?!) I’ll go for some of AmazingMoms’ Junior Mints Chocolate Cupcakes. And by “some” I mean “most.” I’d share a couple with my family, if they were kind and did the dishes from my day of baking joy!
If you’ve made any of these, let us know how they turned out! What recipes have you seen online that you’re dying to try?
And seriously, I’m considering trying that pie sometime soon to bring to one of Capital Confectioners’ monthly meetings. That’s right, if you come to our meetings, one of our members always brings a dessert to share! We meet the second Tuesday of every month, so check the calendar on our Meetup page to find out where the next meeting will be and come join us!
