Quick Bites: Fun Small Things
Looks like I was so busy this weekend I missed Applesauce Cake Day on June 4 and National Gingerbread Day on June 5. Who comes up with all of these holidays anyway?
Today on Quick Bites, some fun small edibles:
- Cake balls are awesome but also becoming pretty common, so it takes an impressive technique or design to catch my eye. That’s definitely the case with these watermelon cake pops by NataliesCakePops as featured on the Cupcakes Take the Cake blog. Natalie uses chocolate chips inside the cake ball to simulate watermelon seeds. Such an awesome effect from a basic ingredient! Genius!
- Another nifty cake pop that hardly looks like a cake pop at all: Mustache Cake Pops by 1 Fine Cookie. These are so funny and awesome! I want to make a batch for my daughter and her friends because I’m entirely cracked up at the thought of a bunch of five-year-olds goofing off with these treats.
- If you haven’t seen it already, check out this video of a prototype multiple cake ball roller machine by Heavenly Cake Pops. Definitely something that could end up being very cool if they can get it to a mass-market distribution and price!
- If you want to go small but cake balls aren’t your thing, check out this tutorial on Micro-Cupcakes baked in thimbles by kristylynn84 on Instructables.
And a last note: while the items on Minnie Kitchen’s blog aren’t actually edible (I assume), they’re mind-blowingly gorgeous recreations of food in dollhouse scale. Go spend a good long time looking at her stuff and be prepared to be amazed!
